One of Georgia football’s wide receiver newcomers will be sidelined during spring practices after sustaining an ankle injury, he posted on social media Saturday.
Tyer Williams wrote in an Instagram post that he suffered torn ligaments in his ankle and will undergo surgery on Monday.
Georgia held the third of 15 spring practices on Saturday.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Armwood High in Seffner, Fla., is one of six early enrollee wide receivers.
He’s one of four freshmen with the team already including CJ Wiley, Talyn Taylor and Landon Roldan. The Bulldogs also signed Thomas Blackshear, who is expected to join the program this summer.
Georgia also added wide receivers Noah Thomas from Texas A&M and Zachariah Branch from Southern Cal.
Williams is a four-star rated receiver who was ranked as the No. 452 player in the nation in the 247Sports Composite for the Class of 2025 and the No. 61 player in Florida.
He had 30 catches for 796 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior after transferring from Sumer High to Armwood.
“We’ve got a lot of new players,” coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday. “It feels like more new players than ever before, which I think I say that every year. But the numbers don’t say that it’s more new guys, but it certainly feels like that. We’re averaging about 33% new per year, which you’d like for that number back in the old days to be 20-25% new every year. But it’s turning over more and quicker, which we have less turnover than most places.”
