ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Bryce Underwood hype has been going strong in Ann Arbor since November, and it’s not about to slow down anytime soon — especially with the spring game coming up on April 19.
The freshman phenom and No. 1 player in the 2025 recruiting class still has to work to earn the starting quarterback job now that Michigan football added Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene to compete with him. But early returns coming out of spring ball indicate that Underwood may be ahead of schedule.
It’s one thing to hear from the coaches and another from his offensive teammates. But when even defensive players rave about Underwood? That should make your ears perk up.
Senior edge rusher Derrick Moore noted on Wednesday that he gets asked a lot about Underwood, and his biggest takeaway is that what he’s seen in practice is a player who doesn’t exactly look like someone who has just arrived and has yet to take a college snap.
“Bryce has been like — he just looks like a guy. He looks like he’s been here, like he’s been in college really,” Moore said. “He’s looking well out there. His ball placement is crazy. He’s been throwing dots all around practice lately. He just looks relaxed and comfortable. He’s just been doing it. I’m really excited for him as well going into this year, just for everybody to see what he can show as a freshman.”
For someone like Moore, the big concern would be getting the quarterback to the ground. Of course, as Underwood’s teammate, he would like to see him upright at all times, but the edge rusher’s job is to either sack the quarterback or to force him into a tough, hurried throw.
With someone like Underwood — who is reportedly 6-foot-4, 228 pounds — that’s easier said than done. Considering his big body, which jibes more with an upperclassman rather than a 17-year old, as well as his skill set…
