Oklahoma Sooners football fans already know what they’ve got in John Mateer.
It won’t take long for the rest of the country to realize it, too.
Mateer transferred to the Sooners from Washington State, and he’s one of the most electric dual-threat quarterbacks in the land.
The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel expects Mateer to be a superstar. He predicts he’ll be a Heisman Trophy finalist.
“I strongly suspect Mateer is about to take the country by storm just the way he took the Palouse by storm last season,” Mandel writes. “For one thing, he’s extremely fun to watch, with his quick release and uncanny ability to not get tackled. He’ll get a lot of credit if he helps the Sooners turn things around. Also, he’s a bit of a character who’s going to give some memorable postgame interviews.”
For the more statistically inclined, check out Mateer’s numbers from 2024 at Wazzu:
3,139 passing yards on 64.6% completion29 passing TDs to 7 INTs826 rushing yards (4.6 ypc)15 rushing TDs
Given Oklahoma’s history of dual-threat QB stars, Mateer could jump even a notch higher in 2025.
Sure, the step-up in competition will be notable, but Mateer’s abilities should be up to the task.
Things could be really, really fun in Norman this fall.
