Memorial defeated Jasper 36-14 in SIAC football

EVANSVILLE — Wes Kelley summed it up concisely. The right spot at the right time.

Standing in his own end zone, the Memorial defensive back was meant to switch pre-snap with the Tigers’ other safety. Instead, Kelley was motioned back. It put him in the middle of the field with the Jasper quarterback looking across his body. One ill-advised throw later resulted in Kelley sprinting 103 yards on an interception for a touchdown.

Right place at the right time indeed. A “backbreaker” moment when the game was still in doubt. It also highlighted why Memorial still has the potential to win the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference. The ability to create big plays when required remains in the DNA of this roster.

The No. 1 Tigers opened the season with a 36-14 victory over Jasper at Enlow Field. A surprising score in some regard ― how often has this rivalry required a running clock? Mostly, it was a positive impression after entering the season with new faces at key positions.

“The guys stepped up,” Memorial coach John Hurley said. “Even when there were mistakes, not a lot of finger pointing. There’s ownership. That shows a lot of maturity. We got guys making plays on both sides of the ball.”

The defending SIAC champions weren’t devoid of questions in the summer. Gone are four All-State players at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line and linebacker. The lineup had additional holes beyond those positions too. Would the Tigers (1-0) be able to reload?

The Week 1 victory is a start in the right direction. Memorial led 29-0 by halftime and quickly triggered a running clock on the other side of the break. Junior quarterback Luke Brown got better throughout the game: 6 of 9…
