James Colzie III is the head football coach at Florida A&M University.

Florida A&M football is amidst one of its biggest weeks of spring camp.

On Thursday, the Rattlers will get their first game-like simulation when they scrimmage during spring’s sixth football practice.

“Just trying to see what guys do with the ball in their hands and what the defense can do in space,” Second-year FAMU head coach James Colzie III told the Tallahassee Democrat. “We’ve incorporated some different things on both sides of the football. FAMU opened spring football practice with 93 players, significantly higher than last year. Thirty-five of those players are seniors, while about 20-30 are newcomers.

So, Colzie and his coaching staff will see how returning FAMU players have progressed and how off-season recruits mesh with the team.

“Just seeing our veterans continue to improve and then our new guys trying to understand what we’re doing,” Colzie said.

“Seeing the guys compete, coaches compete, and we’re going to throw some special teams in there as well,” Colzie added.
