SOUTH BEND — Veteran offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, entering his third season with Notre Dame football, sees no shortage of leadership potential in his group.

Even with graduate transfers Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler taking their 49 combined career starts to Indiana and Nebraska this offseason, Rudolph likes the answers he’s hearing to the in-house survey he typically conducts.

“I thought we had a lot of leaders last year, and they all led in different ways,” Rudolph said Wednesday after spring practice No. 4. “Some were more vocal and out there. Some were more like, ‘Dude, this guy … ’ “

Fourth-year junior guard Billy Schrauth, recovering from an offseason ankle procedure, is the top answer to Rudolph’s question: “Who would you most want to line up next to?”

“It’s one of my questions I ask each O-lineman and every single guy says Billy Schrauth, “ Rudolph said. “He’s got a vibe because of his mentality, his toughness, the way he wants to attack things, and he makes me feel confident with his energy and his approach. That’s leadership.”

Schrauth, injured in Game 3 last year at Purdue, made it back in time for the Navy game five weeks later despite an in-season TightRope procedure on his right ankle.
