Alexander joins George’s new staff at Bowling Green | Sports

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Dewayne Alexander, whose football coaching journey includes two stops in Wilson County, reached a new height when he became assistant head coach/tight ends coach on Eddie George’s new staff at Bowling Green State University, the school announced earlier this week.

Alexander spent last season on former Middle Tennessee State coach Andy McCollum’s staff at Sewanee. He was set to join George’s staff at Tennessee State when the former Heisman Trophy winner and Titans star took the BGSU job earlier this winter.

The two got to know each other during Alexander’s tenure as Tennessee Tech head coach from 2018-23 where his Golden Eagles faced George’s TSU Tigers in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Hendersonville native has 37 years coaching experience at the high school and college levels since 1988. The transition from preps to college came in Lebanon in 2006 when he left Wilson Central after three seasons to take the head coaching position at Cumberland University.

He led the then-Bulldogs to a 41-33 record over seven seasons, including a share of the Mid-South Conference West Division championship in 2008. He left CU for assistant coaching stints at his alma mater Tech, East Tennessee State and a one-year return engagement as offensive coordinator at Cumberland.

At Wilson Central, he took over a third-year program which had not won a game under two coaches since the school’s opening in 2001. His Wildcats won their first game in Week 5 of the ’03 season over an undefeated Coffee County team. They made the playoffs for the first time in ’04 and picked up their first postseason win, over Warren County, in ’05. He left WCHS with a 19-14 record.
