PALM BEACH, Fla. — Kevin Stefanski hasn’t been absent in previous years when it’s come to the Browns’ pre-draft process. It’s just that this year is such a unique situation compared to the previous five years he’s been the head coach.
“Well, I think the rare part is obviously having the second overall pick, picks at the top of the round,” Stefanski told a small group of Browns beat writers, including the Beacon Journal, Monday at the NFL owners meetings. “You want to be able to see these guys, so we’ve seen them live. That’d be the difference this year.”
Stefanski’s gotten around over the last couple of weeks. The meetings are actually his second stop in South Florida in the last week, having been in Miami last Wednesday for a private workout with Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
The travels have also taken him to Alabama to watch quarterback Jalen Milroe, as well as Ole Miss to watch quarterback Jaxson Dart, as well as a dinner last Thursday in State College, Pa., with defensive end Abdul Carter. He’s going to be out in Colorado at the end of this week to watch Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders and wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter work out.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave have handled most of the quarterbacks workouts. Berry and owner Jimmy Haslam have also been on the trips.
“Yeah, it’s been a really interesting process to date,” Stefanski said. “If you think about it, we’ve met with the guys at the combine. We’ve done some campus visits. We’ve had guys up into our building and we’ll continue those into April. I can’t tell you how impressed I am by all these guys. They’ve been raised the right way.
