Iowa football TE enters transfer portal after redshirt season

The Iowa Hawkeyes football team is in the thick of spring ball as they prepare for the 2025-26 college football season, but they are also navigating the transfer portal once again.

Tight end Gavin Hoffman announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal after a redshirt freshman season. The product of Blue Valley Northwest High School in Leawood, Kan., did not see any game action with the Hawkeyes last year in his lone season with the program.

Hoffman made the announcement via a post on X in which he thanked Iowa, head coach Kirk Ferentz and many others for his time at Iowa.

Coming out of high school, Hoffman was a four-star recruit per 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite. Hoffman was rated the No. 17 tight end and the No. 2 recruit from Kansas in the class of 2024.

Schools to keep an eye on that Hoffman could commit to include many that offered him out of high school. That list features schools such as Arizona State, Missouri, Arkansas, Auburn, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Purdue, Tennessee and Texas Tech.

Hoffman’s departure leaves Iowa’s tight end room currently filled by Zach Ortwerth, Michael Burt, DJ Vonnahme, Addison Ostrenga, and Hayden Large.
