ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was something of a surprise in January when Michigan football took a transfer from Louisiana cornerback Caleb Anderson. Anderson hadn’t exactly posted incredible stats with the Ragin’ Cajuns, having accumulated just 18 tackles and a quarterback hurry last season, one interception and five passes broken up the season before, and one interception returned for a touchdown the season earlier.
However, if anyone knows what Anderson is capable of, it’s Michigan secondary coach LaMar Morgan. Morgan wasn’t just his defensive coordinator at Louisiana, but he was the recruiter that brought him to Lafayette. And thus, Morgan brought him to Ann Arbor.
What Morgan knew from the jump is that he’s cerebral and smart and would be a good fit in Ann Arbor. That happens to be an underrated component when it comes to looking for players who could transfer in, and the grad transfer was a good fit as far as what Morgan saw.
“Well, I think here it’s a little bit different when you go get guys in the portal,” Morgan said. “I think the thing that you got to be careful of is you got to understand this is Michigan with the academic piece, the standards of being able to focus on and off the field. You got to be more than just a football player here. I think that’s what’s kind of attractive.
“Knowing Caleb as a grad transfer, understanding that he’s going to do well academically, he’s going to be tall and long, he can run. He was a high school quarterback, could have went to Utah or Virginia out of high school when we signed him at UL. So, I brought Caleb to UL. So, kind of know what he can do.”
