Oklahoma Sooners offense ready to return to expectations

Oklahoma Sooners’ spring football wrapped on Saturday at the Crimson Combine. Summer workouts and fall camp are all that stand between the Sooners and a redemption season in 2025. Much of that redemptive arch is going to come from an offense that should be better than it was a year ago.

Though it’s only spring, Brent Venables has been encouraged by what he’s seen from his offense.

“We threw the ball and caught the ball as well as we have since I’ve been here,” Venables said via The Oklahoman. “If you said something that stood out in the spring, (there were) very few balls on the ground. Top to bottom throughout the spring. They did a great job of getting the quarterbacks to throw with precision and confidence.

The passing game struggled to get anything easy in 2024. It was inefficient and lacked explosiveness. They couldn’t create a lot of plays after the catch. Oklahoma’s yards per attempt dropped from 9.3 in 2023 to 6.1 in 2024. That wasn’t all because of the quarterback play, but it certainly contributed. But the encouraging signs Venables has seen from the offense this offseason isn’t just about the quarterback either.

Venables said yesterday, “You look at that group at quarterback or wide receiver or tight end, the additions on the offensive line, you see transformation. They’re completely different groups in what they look like from just a few short months ago.”

Oklahoma’s additions of Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer may be the most notable catalysts for the Sooners’ offensive improvements, but the offensive linemen, tight ends, and wide receiver additions will also play major factors. For Oklahoma to improve its win total from a year ago, the offense needs to lead the way.
