Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack expected to have depth when he joined Kalen DeBoer’s staff in 2024.
This season with the Crimson Tide, the former South Alabama head coach is getting just what he came for.
“We have something that we didn’t have a year ago, which is depth in our backfield. And that’s exciting,” Wommack said Monday.

Nowadays, after missing the College Football Playoff in 2024, Wommack said “you feel like you have some bodies that you can work with.”
“You’ve found yourself in a position of guys that left for the draft and guys in the transfer portal and the transition from coach Saban to coach DeBoer to where we just didn’t have the depth probably that we needed to be consistent on the back end throughout the year. And even that, I think our guys did a tremendous job,” Wommack said.
Alabama’s 2025 roster has the position versatility to let Wommack and his staff “move some pieces around” in the Crimson Tide’s corner and safety room that’ll let the defense “find creative ways to get the right packages on the field.”
The Crimson Tide has a slew of cornerbacks on the roster for the upcoming season including star returning starter Domani Jackson alongside Dijon Lee, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., Zabien Brown, Utah transfer Cameron Calhoun and Chuck McDonald. The freshman talent — Lee, Calhoun and McDonald — could be a game-changer.
Alabama’s safeties include Keon Sabb, back from an injury-riddled 2024 season, plus Ivan Taylor, Kameron Howard, Bray Hubbard, who anticipated to be at the front of the depth chart in 2025, and Zavier Mincey.
