Contract details for Georgia football vs. Georgia Tech in Mercedes-Benz Stadium

It will be hard to match the compelling nature of last year’s Georgia football game against Georgia Tech, which the Bulldogs won in eight overtimes, but the game going off campus this season is another change up to the rivalry.

The contract for the Thanksgiving-weekend game between the two schools being shifted from Georgia Tech to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, some two miles from where the teams usually meet in Atlanta, was obtained this week in an open records request by the Athens Banner-Herald.

Georgia gets a $300,000 guarantee, according to the contract agreed to on Oct. 14. That’s the same guarantee it did when it played at Georgia Tech to end the 2023 regular season.

The schools announced in January they were moving the game up a day to Friday Nov. 28. It will be the second year in a row the teams play on a Friday after last year’s 44-42 Georgia win in Athens.

Georgia Tech announced in October that the school is getting a $10 million guarantee to play the Georgia game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium from AMB Sports and Entertainment. Athletic director J Batt, in a letter to fans, called it “a transformative revenue lift.” It’s the first time the game won’t be played either on Georgia or Georgia Tech’s campus since 1913.

Georgia received a $300,000 “nuisance fee,” according to the SEC, for the 2024 game to offsets costs for moving to a nontraditional playing date, but it’s unclear if that is in play again for a game away from Athens.

Georgia will get 1,000 less tickets for the game to sell than in its last visit to Bobby Dodd Stadium to play the Yellow Jackets in 2023, but Bulldog fans usually fill a large portion of the stands when the game is at Georgia Tech.
