Rutgers University Football schedule for 2025

PISCATAWAY – Rutgers football’s backup quarterback situation just became a lot clearer.

Ajani Sheppard announced on social media Tuesday that he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal and will be moving on from the Scarlet Knights.

Sheppard has three years of eligibility remaining.

His departure means that AJ Surace now becomes the backup to starting QB Athan Kaliakmanis.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Sheppard is a Bronx native who played at Iona Prep in Westchester County. He originally had committed to Old Dominion before flipping to Rutgers and joining the Scarlet Knights as part of the 2023 recruiting class.

Sheppard played in four games last season and one in 2023.

Surace meanwhile is a Pennington native who played at Notre Dame High School. He’s the son of longtime Princeton head coach Bob Surace.

Coach Greg Schiano has previously spoken highly about Surace’s football IQ and development.

Rutgers now has three back-up QBs on the roster: Kaliakmanis, Surace and true freshman Sean Ashenfelder.
