Texas football continued to fortify its defensive interior on Tuesday with a portal commitment from Syracuse freshman Maraad Watson.

Watson, a freshman All-American in 2024, emerged as one of this spring’s most coveted players in the portal. Listed as the 12th best defensive lineman in the portal by On3’s industry rankings, the 6-foot-3, 313-pound Watson picked the Longhorns over fellow transfer finalists Tennessee, Georgia, and Ohio State. He has three years remaining of eligibility.

Watson didn’t waste much time making a decision after visiting Texas last weekend.

Of the 10 transfer players Texas has signed or received a commitment from this offseason, five play on the defensive interior. Watson joins fellow transfer defensive tackles Hero Kanu, Travis Shaw, Cole Brevard and Lavon Johnson.

Other portal additions include tight end Jack Endries, kicker Mason Shipley, wide receiver Emmett Mosley, punter Jack Bouwmeester and linebacker Brad Spence. The Longhorns’ portal class ranks No. 22, per On3’s ratings.

Watson started 11 games last season and racked up 31 tackles, 1½ tackles for loss, one sack, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. Pro Football Focus graded him as the Orange’s highest-rated run defender. He’ll likely make a strong case to start, especially since his slashing, gap-shooting style will complement behemoths like the 330-pound Shaw and the 355-pound Brevard.

Texas has lost plenty of defensive line…
