Mississippi State football lands transfers Blake Steen, Sam West

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football has landed two commitments from the transfer portal.

Virginia offensive tackle Blake Steen committed to the Bulldogs and coach Jeff Lebby on April 24. Indiana tight end Sam West committed shortly afterwards. Both of their announcements came on social media.

The 6-foot-5, 331-pound Steen started 12 games last season and five games in 2023 for the Cavaliers. 247Sports ranks Steen as a three-star transfer and the No. 38 offensive tackle in the portal. He was also a three-star in high school at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Pro Football Focus logged Steen for 455 pass-blocking snaps last season with only two sacks allowed.

West, a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman from Greensburg, Indiana, played in 13 games last season, but mainly on special teams. He made one catch for 37 yards. West is an unranked transfer by 247Sports.

Lebby has said since the start of spring practices that offensive line would be addressed in the transfer portal. The defensive line mostly outplayed the offensive line in the spring game, although Albert Reese IV, who won the Kent Hull Trophy in 2024 as the state’s best offensive lineman, didn’t play. There was also a lot of mixing and matching, so the starting offensive linemen weren’t always playing with each other.

MSU hired offensive line coach Phil Loadholt from Colorado in January to replace Cody Kennedy.

Lebby also said he wanted to add at tight end. MSU returns starter Seydou Traore, while second-stringer Justin Ball graduated.

Mississippi State has one other transfer commitment from the spring window so far in Purdue offensive lineman Jaekwon Bouldin.
