Texas A&M falls after Arkansas losses

Texas A&M softball went 1-2 against Arkansas softball over the weekend and dropped in the national rankings.

For two straight weeks, A&M (41-8, 14-6) was the No. 1 team in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. But after the Arkansas series, they dropped to No. 2. Head coach Trisha Ford called losing two in a row to Arkansas “a nightmare,” but the Aggies rebounded with a 2-0 shutout Sunday.

ESPN/USA Softball polls listed the Aggies as the No. 4 team.

With the exception of Oregon in the Big Ten, all teams in the top five belong to the SEC. There is no clear candidate for who will win the regular-season conference title.

But Texas A&M softball is also No. 1 in the NCAA’s RPI ranking, a primary tool used by the selection committee when determining the 16-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament. After being swept by Oklahoma, Texas dropped to No. 9 in RPI.

Texas A&M finishes the regular season against Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., before the SEC tournament in Athens, Ga. The Lady Vols won the SEC conference regular season the last two years and could go a third straight year thanks to junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens (0.96 ERA over 138 innings) in the circle.
