LSU football hosting elite transfer portal safety

LSU is prepping to host A.J. Haulcy, one of the nation’s top transfer portal safeties, on campus for a visit this weekend according to a report from The Advocate.

Haulcy recently made a visit to Miami but may not be able to turn down an opportunity to compete in the SEC. LSU already possesses the nation’s top transfer portal class as it aims to build a championship-level roster on both sides of the football.

Haulcy fits that bill following a first-team All-Big 12 season with Houston. In his second year with the Cougars, he finished with an 80.5 defensive grade, fourth-best in the conference. He ranked second among safeties with six pass breakups and had a 61.9 passer rating when targeted.

In his freshman year with New Mexico, Haulcy made 86 tackles, including eight in a loss against LSU. He then transferred to Houston after the 2022 season and posted 97 tackles as a sophomore. Through three seasons, he played 2,121 snaps.

LSU was aggressive in the winter transfer portal window, but it didn’t add any impact players at the safety position. LSU feels good about its young group of safeties, but they’re inexperienced. Now, LSU has the chance to add another veteran to its secondary.
