The competition for the starting kicker for the Ohio State football team just got a bit more interesting.
According to his social media accounts, former Ball State kicker Jackson Courville has committed to the Buckeyes via the transfer portal. The announcement was made on Saturday and adds some intrigue to the kicking competition this fall.
Originally out of Dayton, Courville has two years of eligibility left. He was solid for the Cardinals, making 54-of-56 extra point attempts during his first two seasons and nailing 26-of-34 field goals. He has a career long of 52 yards and made both attempts over 50 yards during his first two seasons.
It was presumed, maybe even assumed, that Jayden Fielding would be the starting kicker this season after a pretty solid 2024 campaign, one in which we found out he was dealing with an injury, but a veteran kicker like Courville being added to the mix means there could be a pretty significant competition heating up. It’s also possible that this is a long play and that Courville could be redshirted and used after Fielding moves on.
Ohio State hasn’t been particularly active in the spring transfer portal window, but the commitment of Courville does bring the count to four players committed to the Buckeyes during the period. He joins North Carolina defensive end Beau Atkinson, West Virginia offensive lineman Justin Terry, and UNC long snapper Grant Mills.
