Summing up WVU’s haul from the football transfer portal

MORGANTOWN — If the winter transfer portal period was an indication of what Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia  would do in the spring portal, it’d mean they were going to be very active. And, they have.

However, the winter portal of 31 additions wasn’t expected during the spring period, since those large numbers were mostly due to the coaching change. There were a lot of players leaving this period because Rodriguez was over the 105 transfer limit, making room to add more transfers, but Rodriguez has bit off more than he can chew so far, especially after this week going over the limit.

This was one of Rodriguez’s busiest weeks in the portal. Nine portalers announced their commitment to the Mountaineers starting from Sunday, April 27, two days after the window closed for new additions. 

It’s been hard keeping track of Rodriguez’s additions this week and there were some big ones with some SEC additions to the roster that are noteworthy. 

Here are all the transfer additions Rodriguez from this week.

Akron DB, Darrian Lewis

Akron defensive back Darrian Lewis was arguably Rodriguez’s biggest portal addition this period, and he committed this week. Lewis took an official visit on April 23 and committed a week later to the Mountaineers.

Lewis was one of the top defensive backs on the board in the spring as a three-star portal prospect and ranked the 79th safety for the winter and spring combined, according to 247Sports. Lewis had back-to-back 74-tackle seasons and 15 pass breakups with two interceptions over three seasons with the Zips. 

Lewis will make an immediate impact in a secondary that lost Garnett Hollis Jr. to the pros.
