The Big Ten dominated the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 College Football Head Coaches rankings, in a piece written by Blake Toppemeyer, Paul Myerberg, and Jordan Mendoza.
Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day came in second place, the highest Big Ten coach on this list. Coming in at the fifth spot was Penn State’s James Franklin. Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning came in at number six, while Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz came in at No. 14. Illinois head coach Brett Bielema came in at No. 19 to round out the list.
Nebraska was represented in the 18th spot, and Matt Rhule was praised in this article. Here’s what the trio had to say as the coach gets ready for his third season in Lincoln.
“Rhule is starting to pull Nebraska back toward relevancy, just as he did during previous stints at Temple and Baylor. His disciplined approach should yield a breakthrough for the Cornhuskers in 2025. After turning the Owls into a Group of Five power and cleaning up a messy situation with the Bears, performing a third FBS turnaround would bolster Rhule’s case for being seen as one of the top rebuilders in the sport.”
If there’s one certainty about this list, it’s that the Big Ten remains one of the supreme conferences in all of college football. From a Nebraska perspective, this is a pivotal third year for Rhule and the program, as they look to take that next leap.
Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff time has not been determined yet.
