Weiss football coach Vernon Hughes resigns to coach at Mesquite Horn

Weiss football coach Vernon Hughes has resigned to become the head coach and athletic coordinator at Mesquite Horn, according to the Mesquite school district.

Hughes found success in his two years at Weiss, going 17-5. He reached the playoffs in both seasons but lost in the bi-district round of the Class 5A playoffs each time. In 2024, Weiss averaged 48.1 points per game and sent more than 20 athletes to compete at the collegiate level, according to a Mesquite ISD statement.

Hughes replaced Steve Van Meter as the Wolves’ head coach and campus boys athletic coordinator in 2023. He had spent three years as an offensive coordinator under Van Meter before being promoted to head coach.

At Mesquite Horn, Hughes will take over for Courtney Allen, who was reassigned within the school district after the 2024 season. Allen went 15-16 record during his three years as head coach. Last season Horn, a Class 6A program, finished 2-8.

Hughes, 38, also has coached at Del Valle, Hutto, La Grange and Cuero.
