Four-star corner spurns LSU and commits to Texas

LSU football missed on one of the top in-state prospects for the 2026 cycle. Four-star cornerback Hayward Howard chose Texas in an announcement on Friday.

Despite recent reports listing the Tigers as the favorite, Howard decided to join head coach Steve Sarkisian’s team. The Longhorns made contact with him early in the process, fueling the decision.

Howard hails from New Orleans and plays high school football at Edna Karr. According to On3’s Industry Rankings, he is the No. 11 prospect in the state and No. 35 at his position. The news stunts LSU’s hot streak on securing commitments from in-state players, but not all hope is lost.

LSU joined the recruiting process late, putting them behind the likes of Texas and other Power Four schools. Expect head coach Brian Kelly’s staff to stay in contact with Howard over the coming months and attempt to keep him in his home state.

Howard would have been the second corner to join the class, but LSU is in a good spot after recently earning a commitment from four-star Havon Finney.

LSU football’s 2026 class ranks No. 2 nationally, trailing only USC. According to On3, the Tigers’ average recruit rating is the best in the country.
