Mason ISD announces hiring of new athletic director and football coach

Mason Independent School District officially named Wade Griffin, Weimar athletic director and football coach, as the next athletic director and football coach for the Punchers on Monday.

Griffin has 15 years of head coaching experience, where he put together a 103-70 record with stints at Brookshire Royal, Elgin, White Settlement Brewer, Giddings and three seasons leading Weimar. In 2023, he led the Wildcats to a 10-3 record and a regional semifinal appearance.

Griffin replaces long-time Mason coach Michael McLeod, who did not have his contract renewed at the end of the season and recently took a position as the defensive coordinator at Llano High School.

In McLeod’s six seasons as the Punchers’ head football coach, he posted a 58-16 overall record, including an 11-2 record in 2024. While he did not win a state title during his tenure as head coach, he was a defensive back coach and defensive coordinator during Mason’s two state championships in 2011 and 2018. He was promoted to athletic director in 2019 following Kade Burns’ promotion to Mason High School principal.

Griffin inherits a Puncher football program amid a 14-year district title run as one of the most dominant football programs in the West Texas area.
