The Spartans added another defensive back transfer Tuesday, landing Texas Tech graduate transfer Devynn Cromwell. The Toronto native began his career at the University of Guelph and has one season of eligiblity remaining.

Cromwell, a 6-foot, 200-pound safety, started two of his nine games in 2024 for the Red Raider with 20 tackles. He played 179 snaps on defense and had 87 plays as a multi-unit special teams contributor.

Cromwell is the the Spartans’ seventh defensive back addition and 22nd overall inbound transfer from the portal during the offseason. Along with three January enrollees – cornerbacks Joshua Eaton (Texas State), Malcom Bell (Connecticut) and NiJhay Burt (Eastern Illinois) – MSU added safety Tracy Revels (Bowling Green) and cornerbacka Dontavius Nash (East Carolina) and Anthony Pinnace III (Texas-San Antonio) since the end of spring practice last month.

The Spartans lost versatile Dillon Tatum (Northwestern), starting cornerback Charles Brantley (Miami, Florida), safety Jaylen Thompson (Memphis) and depth cornerbacks Caleb Coley (Eastern Michigan), Philipp Davis (Marshall) and Brandon Lewis (Saginaw Valley State) to outbound transfers since the end of the Spartans’ 5-7 season in Smith’s debut.
