Joey McGuire on Texas Tech football transfer portal outlook for spring

Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire said in December signing a specialist who could both kick and punt was one of his objectives in recruiting the NCAA transfer portal this off-season.
He finally got someone who fits that description. Ian Hershey, who did a little of both in three years of college football at Idaho State and Arizona State, announced his commitment to Texas Tech on Tuesday.
Hershey spent the past two seasons at Arizona State, where he was a third-year sophomore last season. During a 2023 redshirt season, Hershey punted 16 times for a 39.6-yard average, having eight fair caught and three inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. In 2024, Hershey made 7 of 12 field-goal attempts, 20 of 21 extra points and kicked off nine times for a 54.2-yard average. His longest made field goal was from 47 yards.
He didn’t have any placement kicks in 2023 and didn’t punt in a game in 2024.
Hershey went to high school in Pocatello, Idaho, and started his career in 2022 at Idaho State, where he made 7 of 11 field-goal attempts, averaged 38.7 yards on 56 punts and kicked off 36 times for an average of 57.8 yards. His longest made field goal was from 50 yards.
During the December portal period, Tech signed kicker Upton Bellenfant, who made 18 of 21 field goals last season for the University at Buffalo. Bellenfant has been only a kicker. He and walk-on Stone Harrington were the kickers in spring practice.
