Jermaine Bishop commits to Texas football, seeks WR/DB role in college

PODCAST: Why Texas football’s 2025 offense soars under Arch Manning

Texas ex Rod Babers joins Statesman columnist on the On Second Thought to discuss Arch Manning taking over in 2025 and the Longhorns in the NFL draft.

Texas football recruiting landed a big win Wednesday afternoon, getting a commitment from 2026 four-star athlete Jermaine Bishop Jr. The prospect hails from Willis and is the No. 20 player in Texas and the No. 8 athlete, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Similar to recent No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Travis Hunter, Willis splits time between wide receiver and cornerback. Productive at both positions, he broke out as a sophomore, collecting 1,414 receiving yards as one of the primary targets for eventual Florida quarterback DJ Lagway. He upped his production once Lagway left, with 1,565 yards receiving, 18 touchdowns, six pass breakups and three interceptions.

Bishop’s goal is to play both sides of the ball in college, having been inspired by Hunter’s run at Colorado, according to 247Sports. Bishop chose Texas over Oklahoma and Florida, with both schools wanting him to focus on one side of the ball.

“Now that people know that it’s possible to do it, they know it can be done at that level. It was an eye-opening experience for the rest of the world,” Bishop said.

An interesting wrinkle in Bishop’s recruitment is that 247Sports’ individual rankings have him as a five-star prospect, the No. 1 athlete in the nation and the No. 3 player in Texas, a wide gap from the composite.

The Longhorns’ 2026 recruiting class now consists of seven commits and is ranked the 30th-best class in the nation. In 2025, Texas ended the year with the No. 1 recruiting class after a strong end to the cycle.
