Record-setting Franklin set for state meet
Ruben Torres is returning to Franklin High School as its new head football coach, replacing Darren Walker.Torres previously served as an assistant coach at Franklin before becoming head coach at Marlin and later offensive coordinator at Garland Naaman Forest.Torres expressed excitement about returning to Franklin and being closer to his children.He aims to build upon the school’s strong football tradition and achieve even greater success.
Franklin High School is turning to a familiar name to build on its proud football tradition, as Ruben Torres is set to become the school’s fifth head coach.
He replaces Darren Walker, who was reassigned in February after 18 mostly successful seasons at Franklin. The Cougars were 6-5 with a bidistrict loss this past season.
Torres was part of that success as an assistant for Walker at Franklin from 2018 until he became the head coach at Marlin (near Waco) in 2021. He coached Marlin for three years, then was the offensive coordinator last year at Garland Naaman Forest for head coach Jesse Perales, a former long-time Del Valle coach.
Torres was the head coach at El Dorado in 2016 and ’17 and was the head coach at Ysleta for four years prior to that.
“I’m extremely excited,” Torres said. “Being away for a while I got a chance to grow as a coach, professionally and personally. Having the opportunity to go back to Franklin, which is where I was before I left, it’s a special community and I enjoyed my time there.
“I’ve always told myself, if Franklin ever opened, it would definitely be a place I’d want to go back to El Paso for.”
