After winning the SEC regular season title in its first year, the Texas Longhorns baseball team took home several of the conference’s postseason awards. Jim Schlossnagle has been named SEC coach of the year and Dylan Volantis was named SEC freshman of the year.
In Schlossnagle’s first year as head coach of the Longhorns, Texas won the outright regular season conference title with a 22-8 SEC record. Texas, who is 42-11 overall, is the No. 1 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament. Texas is ranked No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll behind LSU.
Volantis became the Longhorns primary closer, earning 12 saves with a 1.66 ERA in 43.1 innings. Opponents are batting just .176 against him. Volantis was also named a first-team All-SEC selection and an freshman All-SEC selection.
Catcher Rylan Galvan joins Volantis on the All-SEC first team. Galvan offensive line is .299/.453/.635 with a 1.088 OPS. He had 50 hits with 46 RBIs and led Texas in 14 home runs.
Several Longhorns made the All-SEC defensive team including Galvan, second baseman Ethan Mendoza, first baseman Kimble Schuessler and outfielder Will Gasparino.
Texas’ next game is Thursday at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala.UT gets a few days of rest before hitting the diamond in the third round of the SEC tourney in Hoover, Alabama. Texas will face the survivor among No. 8 seed Tennessee, No. 9 Alabama or No. 16 Missouri in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 22 at 3 p.m. CT
