Heading into the 2025 college football season, Oregon Duck fans are optimistic about the new year. While there are many new faces and big questions about the roster, the talent in Eugene is among the best in the nation, and there are expectations that they will once again compete for the Big Ten Championship and make it into the College Football Playoff.
For those things to happen, though, the Ducks’ quarterback room is going to need to prove itself. With veterans like Bo Nix or Dillon Gabriel no longer in the mix, Oregon will turn to either Dante Moore or Austin Novosad as their starter, and while both are incredibly talented, they need to prove that they are up to the task of leading a championship contender.
Apparently, ESPN isn’t yet sold on that possibility. In a recent breakdown of the top tiers of quarterbacks in the nation, the Ducks didn’t crack the top of the top. They didn’t even come close, being put into ‘Tier 5’ along with Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss. The “Waiting is the hardest part” tier groups the players together because they have been learning the offensive systems in the waiting behind past starters.
Ahead of the Ducks on the list are teams like Clemson, LSU, Penn State, Texas, Arizona State, Florida, and Miami, among others. In total, there were 25 teams who were listed in the four tiers ahead of Oregon.
While the college football world at large may not be sold on the Ducks and their QB room just yet, the feeling in Eugene is that they’ve got all the talent that they need to succeed this season. In the end, it may just take the rest of the world to catch up.
