Arkansas baseball shortstop Wehiwa Aloy wasn’t selected to the All-SEC First or Second Teams in the preseason.
Now, the Razorbacks’ Hawaiian star closes the spring as the league’s best player.
Aloy was named the SEC Player of the Year on Monday, becoming the second Hog to ever win the award. Andrew Benintendi was the first in 2015.
In 55 games, Aloy is slashing a team-leading .358/.440/.677 with 18 homers, tied for ninth-most in a season by a Razorback. He also has 58 RBIs, while pacing the SEC in runs scored (72) and base hits (82).
Named a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist as well as a two-time SEC Player of the Week this season, Aloy has also dazzled defensively with just four errors in 192 total chances, good for a .979 fielding percentage on the year.
Aloy was one of five Razorbacks named All-SEC. Outfielder Charles Davalan, designated hitter Kuhio Aloy and starting pitcher Zach Root were first-team selections, while first baseman Cam Kozeal earned a second-team designation.
Tennessee’s Liam Doyle was named Pitcher of the Year. He enters the postseason with nine wins and leads the nation with 137 strikeouts.
Texas took home two major honors. Jim Schlossnagle was named Coach of the Year after leading the Longhorns to the conference title in their first year as an SEC school. Texas’ Dylan Volantis is the Freshman of the Year.
Mississippi State’s Ace Reese is the SEC Newcomer of the Year.
Arkansas begins its postseason journey on Friday in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. The Hogs received a double bye as the No. 2 seed and will face one of South Carolina, Florida or Ole Miss in their opening game.
