The last time Michigan football got a commitment from a four-star tight end from the Mountain West region of the United States, it worked out pretty good. Gooding (Idaho) star Colston Loveland shined wearing maize and blue, so much so that he ended up being the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft following his junior season. After adding Loveland in 2024, the Wolverines went a little further West to bring in Pacific Northwest four-star tight end Hogan Hansen, who’s expected to star for the maize and blue this year.
Is another one on the horizon? It appears that way.
Billings (Mt.) West four-star TE Matt Ludwig commits to Michigan
The moment that the Wolverines’ self-imposed recruiting ban at the outset of May was up, the coaches hit the road and hit it hard. Among those who were visited was Matt Ludwig, rated the No. 92 player in the country according to On3. In the aftermath of Steve Casula making his way to Billings, Ludwig pulled the trigger, giving his verbal commitment to the maize and blue. Other schools in contention included Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech.
Ludwig is the sixth commitment of the class and the first tight end. The Wolverines took one nominal tight end last cycle in Eli Owens, who projects more to be that H-back/fullback type like Max Bredeson. Michigan did have Andrew Olesh pledged for quite some time, but he flipped to Penn State a few days after the early signing period had started.
