The first in an occasional position-by-position preview of the UCF football team heading into the offseason:
TODAY: QUARTERBACK
What to expect
The Knights enter the offseason facing a significant question mark at the quarterback position, with no clear frontrunner emerging just yet. Tayven Jackson, a promising transfer from Indiana, has made a strong impression and is the early favorite among the contenders. However, the competition for the starting job has been intense, and the hierarchy could shift dramatically as the team gears up for its season opener against Jacksonville State on August 28.
Jacurri Brown showcased remarkable growth during spring camp, demonstrating his potential to reclaim his position. On the other hand, Cam Fancher, a transfer from FAU, brings valuable experience and the versatility of a dual-threat quarterback, giving the coaching staff an exciting option to consider. Additionally, Davi Belfort joined the squad during the spring transfer window, adding another dynamic dual-threat talent. With such a variety of capabilities among the contenders, the race for the starting quarterback role is shaping up to be a compelling storyline for the Knights this offseason.
What they’re saying
“There are a few non-negotiables when it comes to playing quarterback in terms of work ethic, mentality, and things like that, but everybody will be a little different when playing the game. Patrick Mahomes doesn’t look the same as Joe Burrow; Tom Brady doesn’t look the same as Michael Vick, but there are different ways to succeed. So, as a staff, it’s important to understand who our personnel is and how we can make them successful.” — UCF quarterbacks coach McKenzie Milton.
