NC Fayetteville Westover’s head football coach Ernest King steps down

Westover High School is now in search of a new head football coach, just months before the season begins.

After seven seasons as the Wolverines’ leader of the program, Ernest King has decided to step down from his head coaching duties.

“I’d like to thank Dr. Lowry and the rest of the faculty for being so supportive of the program and my decision,” King said. “It’s been an honor and a pleasure at Westover, but I couldn’t have done it without the staff.”

King told The Fayetteville Observer that this decision didn’t come lightly, but it’s time to take a step back to focus on his family, grandkids and aging father.

“I’ve given 42 years of my life,” he said. “I’ll never say I won’t coach again, but it won’t be as a head coach. When you’re a head coach and you’re away, all you can think about is the program.

”I have grandkids now and I want to spend time with them. My dad is getting old and my mom passed away, so it’s time,” said King.

King, a graduate of Westover, was a standout football player, marking his name in the record books for the most punt returns for touchdowns and interceptions in school history.

After his playing career at Arkansas Tech University, King took his talent to the sidelines to serve as assistant coach at Westover, E.E. Smith, Lumberton, and Jack Britt, then later took on head coaching responsibilities at E.E. Smith and St. Paul’s before ultimately returning to Westover to lead its program.
