As spring playoffs wound down, fans got a quick preview of what to expect in the 2025 high school football season as county teams wrapped up spring practice with jamborees or spring football games.
Updates on a handful of teams, including Lakeland, Lake Wales, Auburndale, Fort Meade, Mulberry, Tenoroc and Winter Haven have already been highlighted. Here are updates on Ridge Community, Lake Gibson, Frostproof and Davenport.
Ridge: Tubbs not only weapon on offense
Ridge Community had mixed results in 2024. The Bolts were 7-3 last season and were with two of the losses being by one score. Unfortunately for the Bolts, one of the losses came against Haines City and cost them the district title and a playoff berth.
So it wasn’t some improved skill that head coach Richard Tate was looking for — although that’s always good — as much as more maturity.
“When you had a 1,600 yard rusher and your defense was probably top four or five of the county, it’s more about just continue to grow up and understand what all it takes to play and those tough games that are so meaningful,” Tate said. “You got to be mentally tough. You got to realize that good things can happen and bad things can happen. You need to overcome those and and continue to fight and play.”
That 1,600-yard rusher is Lavonski Tubbs, who is the centerpiece of the Ridge offense. Quarterback Amir Hall returns and will have Daniel James, who played at Haines City and Schneider Celestin at wide receiver. Developing the duo with Hall to be playmakers will take pressure off Tubbs. James caught two touchdown passes in Ridge’s spring victory, so that was a good sign.
The strength of the defense coming out…
