STATE COLLEGE ― An already inexperienced Penn State football defensive line just lost one of its most promising young players.
The Nittany Lions and new leader Jim Knowles must replace pass rusher Max Granville, a potential starter. The redshirt freshman suffered a “long-term injury” after spring practice, while working out at home in Texas, head coach James Franklin confirmed Thursday, June 5.
At least the PSU defense, against expected to be a top-10 unit in the country, has nearly three months to figure out a plan.
Granville had been a leader to start opposite of All-America candidate Dani Dennis-Sutton and help replace the loss of first-round NFL Draft pick Abdul Carter.
Franklin did not specify the injury, per program protocol, or attempt to offer a recovery timeline.
“Heart breaks for the kid and the family, and obviously not what we wanted or needed either,” Franklin said during an annual June press conference with his assistant coaches. “We were depending on (him) taking that next step this year.
Granville played a backup role in seven games last year after reclassifying and enrolling in college a year early and packing on 25 pounds. He played in three regular-season games to preserve his redshirt and steadily trended upward in the postseason.
