Vanguard football’s James Bethea, other Ocala players seeing recruitment heat up

Three members of Georgia football’s coaching staff were front row as James Bethea hauled in a pair of touchdown catches during Vanguard’s 21-7 spring game win over Eastside. Hours later, he posted to social media that he had received an offer from the Bulldogs..

Bethea, a 2027 football prospect, added 12 offers to his recruiting list since the close of spring football. In the last two weeks Miami, Auburn, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and a host of others all want him in their 2027 recruiting class.

This brings Bethea’s reported offer count to 17. At 16 years old and with just one year of varsity play under his belt, there’s plenty of time to see how far one of the fastest rising recruits in Florida will go.

“It’s a blessing, man,” Bethea told the Star-Banner. “I’m going to keep working and stay humble. In one wrong decision, it could a be gone. So, gratitude is the motto that I live by.”

Bethea, a 6-foot-1 athlete, played in the defensive backfield for the Knights in 2024, but is a natural receiver. He’s played the position since his MCYFL days when coaches noticed his combination of size and speed. During team camp circuits, he’s proven his hands and route-running can match up with the nation’s best.

Bethea and several other Marion County football players have captured the eyes of colleges over the last two weeks. Bethea’s fellow 2027 classmates, RB/LB Sergarion Gunsby and defensive end Noah Robinson have also received Division I offers. Dunnellon standouts Elijah Townes and LJ Woods are doing the same.

College coaches aren’t permitted to make direct contact with 2027 prospects until June 15, meaning Bethea’s phone battery may not last through the day with the volume of calls he’s projected to receive.
