ESPN recently released their preseason Football Power Index (FPI) rankings. Georgia Bulldogs fans learned that the Dawgs are ranked No. 2 on FPI with a rating of 26.6.
The Football Power Index is a predictive ranking system that quantifies team strength. It is used to predict games and season results in football. FPI is most useful in college football because team strength is tougher to gauge due to the high number of teams in Division I and the uneven strength of conferences.
FPI views the SEC as the strongest conference in football since the SEC has the top three teams and five of the top 10 teams in the FPI rankings. The Big Ten has three top 10 teams, the ACC has just one, and Notre Dame rounds out the list.
ESPN’s projections have Georgia making the College Football Playoff 78.9% of the time, which is the second most of any team outside of the Texas Longhorns. Georgia also has the second-highest odds to win the SEC and make the national championship.
Even still, Georgia’s projected record sits at 10.1-2.4, which ranks fourth behind Texas, Ohio State, and Penn State. They have a gauntlet of SEC opponents to face and a challenging 2025 schedule.
