Each offseason, ESPN takes a crack at predicting college football’s future top teams. The exercise not only includes the 2025 season but also a few seasons after that.
In its future power rankings, ESPN predicts what teams will be the dominant ones a few years down the road. The Colorado Buffaloes were not ranked in last year’s rankings, so this year they made a tremendous jump into the top 40. Colorado comes in at No. 35 in Adam Rittenberg’s latest rankings, spotlighting Julian Lewis and the talented CU coaching staff as major keys.
Without question, much of Colorado’s future hinges on Lewis and head coach Deion Sanders’ ability to continue luring top talent to Boulder. Sanders’ third year at the helm will be his first without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. How the Buffaloes’ coach reconstructs his team will be a significant factor in how good Colorado can be in the next few years.
Rittenberg’s No. 35 ranking seems apt considering Colorado is continuing to add experienced transfers to complement a small batch of elite-level high school recruits. As long as Deion Sanders is the head coach, the Buffs should hover right around the top 25 teams, with some seasons being well within the top quarter of teams.
Colorado comes in as the No. 8 Big 12 team behind Arizona State (No. 12), Iowa State (No. 19), Kansas State (No. 21), BYU (No. 25), Texas Tech (No. 29), Utah (No. 30) and Baylor (No. 32). The Buffaloes sit aquarely in the middle of the 16-team Big 12 entering a season that could see the rankings swing significantly in either direction.
