Freshman defensive lineman Stephon Shivers is no longer with the Florida Gators football team following a June 1 arrest, according to both Swamp247 and Gators Online.
Gainesville Police arrested Shivers “on a count of false imprisonment (dating violence),” according to the Gainesville Sun. The Alachua County Juvenile Court later placed him on house arrest following his first public court appearance on June 4. Shivers wore a “white polo shirt with a Florida Gators logo” while appearing before Alachua County Court Circuit Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard.
The maximum penalty for false imprisonment in the state of Florida is up to five years in prison and a fine of $5,000.
A former three-star recruit, Shiver signed as a member of the 2024 recruiting class out of Brentwood Academy in Humboldt, Tenn.
“Big Shivers,” Billy Napier said after signing Shivers. “We’re losing Big Des in camp. I think we were looking for a big man in there that could play nose. (6-foot-) Four and three-quarters, 380 (pounds). Big, long guy. When is the last time you’ve seen a 380-pound guy run a 75-yard touchdown? The guy is running the ball on Friday nights. Just a big, athletic guy.”
Shivers participated minimally in spring camp while working through a lower back injury. A project player with a ton of obvious upside, cutting a player with off-the-field problems was the better option for Florida football.
