“Did you play for Bobby?”
That’s usually the first question Danny McManus is asked about regarding his football career (1983-87) at Florida State. Still considered one of the program’s all-time great quarterbacks, McManus was a senior starter when the Seminoles started their Dynasty Era in 1987 under legendary coach Bobby Bowden.
“I tell them, ‘Yes, I played for Coach Bowden,’ ” said McManus, who turned 60 this month. “And what you saw on TV, that was him That’s what he was like. And then when I see pictures of myself, it’s like, ‘Look at that guy.’ I have a mustache, (wearing) gold chains, it was the Miami Vice days.
“I don’t think of it being that long ago – but it was.”
It was, but it’s a time that will forever live in FSU history.
In his final game against Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl, McManus directed a game-winning scoring drive in the closing minutes. He hit flanker Ron Lewis with a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 3:07 left to lift FSU over the Cornhuskers, 31-28. The victory punctuated an 11-1 season and a No. 2 national ranking that set the stage for the Seminoles’ amazing run.
