Collierville lineman Marshall Smith Jr. commits to Memphis football

A top talent in the Memphis area is staying home for college.

Collierville defensive lineman Marshall Smith has committed to Memphis football, he announced on June 21. Smith chose the Tigers over offers from Mississippi State, UNLV and others.

A standout on one of the top defenses in the Memphis area, Smith made 21 tackles (eight for loss) in 2024. He’s the first local commit in the Tigers’ 2026 recruiting class. He’s the third commitment of the day after Greenville, South Carolina, receiver Jude Hall and Evergreen, Alabama, defensive back J.T. Barlow.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Smith will add to a defensive line that has other local recruits. Southwind’s Kavion Benton is a redshirt sophomore, while Whitehaven’s Taylor Burton transferred from UT-Martin ahead of the 2025 season.

He’ll also join a fellow Collierville alum in quarterback Grant Troutman, who recently joined the team ahead of summer practices. The Dragons went 11-2 in 2024, losing to eventual 6A state runner-up Houston in both the regular season and the playoffs.

Memphis kicks off its 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Chattanooga at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
