The Colorado Buffaloes and the University of Colorado announced significant changes to Folsom Field this offseason, and those alterations are now complete.
Folsom Field, after being natural grass since 1998, is now artificial turf. The new surface is especially prevalent in cold-weather climates, where maintaining natural grass can be challenging during the winter months. Colorado had a synthetic surface for 28 years from 1971 until 1998, during which several CU teams experienced extended periods of success.
The project began after the annual Bolder Boulder race in late May and seems to have finished ahead of schedule, as the first events scheduled at Folsom Field are for the Fourth of July weekend.
An artificial surface allows the university to host more events, including concerts, during the football season. Furthermore, the new college football schedule includes College Football Playoff games played at home venues, making artificial turf a necessary addition to Folsom Field.
“I think putting turf down there gives us flexibility, certainly with the change in the College Football Playoff,” Colorado athletic director Rick George said about the project. “Being a northern school, you don’t grow grass after October, and having a game in December was a big part of that consideration. Plus, it gives us another field we can practice daily that will benefit our football program.”
The replacement surface was not inexpensive, as it cost upwards of $1 million, but it is expected to last 12-15 years. Much has been discussed in the football world about the impact artificial turf has on injuries, specifically soft tissue injuries. Colorado hopes that the benefits outweigh the costs, and the new field will enable other CU athletic teams to play their matches in the larger stadium.
