Rutgers football has earned the commitment of Class of 2026 defensive back Cannon Marshall, who will forgo his year at a prep school and join the team this summer. With the addition of Marshall, the 2025 recruiting class now has 29 verbal commitments. Marshall is the third from North Carolina, joining linebacker Isaiah Deloatch and defensive back Steven Murray as 2025 commits from the state.
Marshall measures at 6’ 2’’ and 185 pounds, and played his high school football for Rolesville High School in his hometown of Rolesville, North Carolina. He did not receive much attention as a recruit, causing him to reclassify to the 2026 class. The Rutgers coaching staff had hosted Marshall for a visit during the Scarlet/White spring game in addition to a midweek visit. Greg Schiano and the Rutgers brass decided to offer Marshall during the visit, leading to his commitment to the Scarlet Knights.
This marks the fifth straight year that Rutgers football has seen a player reclassify and commit to the program a year earlier than expected. Other Scarlet Knights that have made the same transition were quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, linebacker Dariel Djabome, defensive back Sage Clawges, running back Antwan Raymond, and most recently, fellow defensive back Latrell Noel, who similarly reclassified into the 2025 class.
Marshall was a three-sport athlete in high school, also playing basketball and track at Rolesville High School. In particular, his speed caught the eye of the Rutgers staff, with a time of 10.6 seconds in the 100-meter dash as well as running a 4.4-second 40-yard dash. Marshall joins fellow defensive backs Tariq Hayer, Michael Clayton, Renick Dorilas, and Latrell…
