BEDFORD — With all-stars at his disposal, Steve Abraham decided to dial it back on offense.
Abraham is the head coach of Team East for the Dartmouth Health Children’s New Hampshire East-West high school all-star football game on Friday (6 p.m.) at Saint Anselm College.
The annual exhibition game, featuring recently graduated players from across the state, will raise funds to benefit programs and services at Dartmouth Health Children’s and and the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (CHaD). The New Hampshire Union Leader is among the game’s sponsors.
“Defense is easy — it’s a reactionary type thing,” Abraham, the head football coach at Salem High School, said during Team East’s practice at the NH Sportsplex on Tuesday. “On the offense, we’re all (coming from) different systems so it’s really just been … these are the best of the best. Let’s put simple stuff in and do it good.”
Abraham and new Alvirne coach Justin Hufft, Team East’s offensive coordinator, have an embarrassment of riches at running back.
The squad boasts, among others, Campbell’s Scott Hershberger, the state’s all-time leading rusher and the 2024 Gatorade New Hampshire Football Player of the Year, Exeter’s Daniel Batstone and Salem’s Kevin Todisco.
Hershberger will continue his career at the University of New Hampshire.
Batstone and Todisco were both finalists for the 2024 Joe Yukica Player of the Year Award, won by Hershberger. The award is presented to the most outstanding NHIAA football player as voted on by the NHIAA head coaches and media members.
But Team East can throw the ball, too, Abraham said. Timberlane’s Jeremy Mlocek, who will play at Husson University this fall, and Alvirne’s Charlie Crawford will split time under center for Team East.
