Top TE Mack Sutter picks Alabama; Illinois just misses out

Illinois was not able to keep the hometown tight end in Illinois, as Mack Sutter picks Alabama to play his college ball.

There was a lot of anticipation leading up to 4-star tight end Mack Sutter’s commitment day. He is the highest ranked pass catching-blocker in the state of Illinois, and so highly toughted that he had Illinois, Ohio State, Alabama and Ole Miss vying for his talents.

Sutter settles on Bama, who lost in the ReliaQuest Bowl to Michigan after finishing 9-3 in the regular season.

His junior season was productive, mainly lining up outside as a receiver, he recorded 35 catches for 505 yards and seven touchdowns, and averaged 15 yards per catch.

Bama will have to wait another year until he gets on campus, but the anticipation builds for his arrival, as it is expected he can make an instant impact on the field.

Illinois already has a strong 2026 recruiting class, so missing out on Sutter does not hurt the Illini as much as it would have even three years ago, but still is a hard pill to swallow for the Illini fans who wanted the Dunlap product.

Now Illinois and Bret Bielema’s staff attention turns to another Illinois tight end and Sutter’s good friend J.C. Anderson. Anderson announced a commitment date of July 1st, where he will decide between Illinois, Auburn and Ole Miss.
