4-star Deacon Schmitt commits to Sooners

Deacon Schmitt is already fitting right in with the Oklahoma football program.

The Northern Colorado 4-star recruit didn’t just commit to the Sooners.

Immediately after announcing his commitment to OU, Schmitt hit the ‘Horns Down’ symbol, a mild jab at Oklahoma’s longtime Red River rival in Texas.

“I hit the Horns Down because the sight of burnt orange makes me puke,” Schmitt told the Coloradoan.

Talk about endearing yourself to a fanbase. And there was more where it came from.

Six Zero has produced dozens of college-bound players, but McChesney said Schmitt is “elite” and “all in.”

“He’s made like 5 (defensive lineman) who train with us quit in the last six months,” McChesney told the room to a chorus of laughs.

Already 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds with elite athleticism and nimble footwork, the rising senior could play guard or tackle at the next level.

But he knew he wanted it to be at Oklahoma, singling out OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh as perhaps the biggest factor in his recruitment.

“It’s a brotherhood over there in Norman. And I get a chance to play for I think the best offensive line coach in college…
