Josiah Jefferson chooses Utah over Oklahoma football

Josiah Jefferson, a junior-college tight end and younger brother former Oklahoma safety Tony Jefferson, spurned his brother’s school Friday, instead committing to play his FBS football at Utah.

The younger Jefferson is rated the No. 4 junior-college recruit in the country and the top-ranked JUCO tight end in the class by 247Sports. He had 23 catches for 213 yards as a freshman at Southwestern College near San Diego last year, his freshman season. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Oklahoma’s Class of 2026 carries 13 commitments. Led by quarterback Bowe Bentley, the Sooners have captured three four-star players in the group. That ranks them 43rd in the country and 10th in the SEC. The number is expected to climb, however, as the fall begins.

Tony Jefferson played three seasons for OU from 2010-2012. He was a Freshman All-American in his first season after logging 65 tackles, including 6 1/2 for-loss, two sacks and two interceptions. After his junior season, Tony Jefferson was named first-team All-Big 12 upon registering 119 tackles and two interceptions. He left after that season for the NFL, where he set to enter his 12th season.

The Sooners could have used some help at tight end. Their expected starter this season is likely Will Huggins, who is in his first season in Norman after transferring from Pittsburg State at the Division II level. His back-up is likely another transfer, Carson Kent, from Kennesaw State.
