Michigan football continues to wind up its class of 2026 as June winds down.
Markel Dabney, a three-star athlete from Huguenot High School in Richmond, Virginia, pledged to join the Wolverines on Friday, June 27. Dabney committed via social media, with a post also announcing his decommitment from SMU with a “VA ➡️ AA.” statement.
“This recruiting journey has been nothing short of a blessing,” Dabney wrote in his post. “I want to give a huge thank you to the coaching staff at SMU, Y’all welcomed me like family, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
“After long talks with my family and deep throught, I’ve decided to decommit from SMU and officially commit to THE University of Michigan!
“It’s time to go to work — #GoBlue.”
Dabney, at 6 feet 1 and 205 pounds, is rated No. 20 in Virginia, the No. 53 athlete nationally and No. 807 player overall, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.
Originally committed to SMU on May 13 as a hybrid linebacker and potential nickel back, Dabney seemingly never shut down his recruitment, going on a host of official visits over the following six weeks.
That included an official visit to Ann Arbor the weekend of June 13, when linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary really began to turn up the heat.
U-M’s win on Dabney is another victory in Virginia for the Wolverines. U-M also has 2026 pledges from Tariq Boney (Washington) and is perceived to be the leader for four-star Richmond defensive back Andre Clark (Hermitage High) Travis Johnson of Chesapeake, Virginia.
