Kansas State football defensive ends coach Buddy Wyatt talks discusses what he likes about the Wildcats’ ability to rush the passer.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State football defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman didn’t abandon his base defense last season, but neither was he married to the three-man front that had served the Wildcats so well for the past few years.

A rash of injuries at linebacker certainly contributed to his willingness to put an extra body on the line of scrimmage, but that was just part of the story. The Wildcats’ wealth of depth and talent at defensive end was a major factor as well.

“As the year went on last year, we increased doing that a little bit more, and part of it was we had some injuries at linebacker,” Klanderman said of deploying three ends along with the nose tackle up front. “And the other part was shoot, there were a lot of talented guys that were standing next to me that needed to be out there more.

“And so, we got into that in a bigger way toward the end of last year. And yeah, we’re still — as we do every year — working through things with that and trying to find better ways that we could maybe do some things out of that. But that’s just no different than any other year.”
